Intense Heat Expected from May 25 to June 2: Understanding the Significance of Nautapa

New Delhi, May 19: The heat is set to intensify. According to the weather department, temperatures in New Delhi reached 42 degrees Celsius on Tuesday. This heat wave is not expected to subside anytime soon. Many regions across India, including Delhi-NCR, will experience rising temperatures. The Indian government has already issued an advisory regarding the heatwave.

Starting from May 25, Nautapa will commence, lasting until June 2. During these nine days, the earth will experience extreme heat, with a likelihood of scorching winds.

‘Nautapa’ translates to nine days of intense heat. According to astrology, the sun enters the Rohini constellation during the month of Jyeshtha. On May 25, the sun will transition into this constellation, reducing the distance between the sun and the earth. Consequently, the sun’s rays hit the earth directly and intensely, leading to a significant rise in temperature. During these nine days, temperatures are expected to be considerably higher than normal, often accompanied by heatwaves.

However, Nautapa is not solely about heat; it also holds great importance for the monsoon and agriculture. It is believed that the more severe the heat and drought during Nautapa, the better and longer the subsequent monsoon will be. The hot and dry days of Nautapa warm the ocean waters, accelerating the cloud formation process, which in turn benefits the Kharif crops with ample rainfall.

Astrologically, the moon governs the Rohini constellation. The sun’s intense presence diminishes the moon’s cooling effect, resulting in heightened heat during this period. Religious texts provide guidance on what to do and what to avoid during Nautapa. It is recommended to worship the Sun God during this time. Offer water to the Sun God using a copper pot filled with rice, jaggery, vermilion, and red flowers, while also performing rituals with incense and lamps.

In addition to worship, charitable acts hold significant value during Nautapa. During these nine days of extreme heat, it is advised to provide refreshments, cooling water, fans, and seasonal vegetables and fruits to those in need. Avoid heavy or stale food and opt for fresh, sattvic meals. Ensure that people stay hydrated, and consider providing food and water for animals and birds as well.

Alongside positive actions, there are also recommendations on what to refrain from during Nautapa. It is advised against conducting weddings, engagements, haircuts, housewarmings, and other auspicious activities. Starting any new or significant work should also be avoided. It is wise to limit outdoor activities between noon and 4 PM, as this can pose health risks.

Furthermore, it is crucial to avoid going outside during the peak hours of 12 PM to 4 PM. Stay hydrated, use umbrellas, and wear light-colored clothing. Special care should be taken for the elderly, children, and those who are unwell.
