New Delhi, March 6: Rumors of a fuel shortage have spread rapidly on social media, causing unnecessary crowds at petrol stations in several cities. Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) took to the social media platform ‘X’ on Friday to categorically refute these claims.
The company stated, “The reports circulating on social media regarding a shortage of petrol and diesel are completely baseless. India has a sufficient stock of fuel, and the supply and distribution network is functioning normally.”
They further assured, “Indian Oil is fully committed to maintaining uninterrupted fuel supply. Citizens are reassured that there is no need for concern. Please avoid unnecessary crowds at petrol stations and rely only on official sources for accurate information.”
This statement comes amid rising tensions in the Middle East, particularly the Iran-Israel conflict and U.S. involvement, which have led to an increase in global crude oil prices. Viral messages and reels have claimed that a fuel shortage could occur or that prices might soar to 500 rupees per liter, resulting in panic buying in cities like Hyderabad and Pune. Long queues formed at petrol pumps, but government sources and oil companies clarified that there is no such situation.
According to government sources, India has ample stocks of crude oil and refined products (petrol, diesel, ATF, etc.), sufficient to meet approximately 25 days of crude demand and a total of 8 weeks of overall demand. Additionally, the U.S. has granted a temporary 30-day waiver on oil imports from Russia, ensuring that the supply chain remains unaffected. The Petroleum Ministry and other companies, such as Bharat Petroleum (BPCL), have also issued similar statements to debunk the rumors.
They made it clear that refineries are operating at full capacity and that there are no plans for rationing or price increases.
