Doha, September 28 (Daily Kiran) : Indian Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman met with Jordan’s Minister of Planning and International Cooperation, Jeina Zaid Toukan, during the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) annual meeting in Doha on September 28, 2026. The two leaders focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation across several sectors.
In a post on social media platform X, the Finance Ministry highlighted the significance of this meeting. Sitharaman emphasized that India ranks as Jordan’s fourth-largest trading partner, aiming to boost bilateral trade to $5 billion by 2030.
Toukan acknowledged India’s importance as a key market for Jordan. She expressed Jordan’s eagerness to continue and strengthen cooperation in areas such as fertilizers, energy, water, and infrastructure projects, while also seeking new investment opportunities in Jordan.
Earlier that day, it was reported that Sitharaman arrived in Qatar to participate in the 11th annual meeting of the AIIB. The ministry noted that she would engage in various significant bilateral discussions with counterparts from Jordan, Switzerland, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, and Nepal.
During her visit, Sitharaman will also meet with top Qatari government officials and engage with local business leaders and investors. The AIIB, headquartered in Beijing, was established in January 2016 with a capital of $100 billion. It aims to finance infrastructure projects that improve economic and social conditions in Asia and around the world, including roads, clean energy, and water systems.
The bank’s key focus areas include promoting clean energy projects, enhancing transportation and digital networks, and strengthening water-related infrastructure among countries. Additionally, the AIIB collaborates with private investors to fund large-scale public and private development projects.
India and Qatar maintain strong bilateral energy ties, exemplified by a 20-year LNG agreement between Petronet LNG and QatarEnergy, ensuring an annual supply of 7.5 million tons of LNG from 2028 to 2048.
