New Delhi, August 14: The Indian Army is set to enhance its strike capability and operational efficiency with a significant move by the Ministry of Defence. On Friday, the ministry signed two contracts worth approximately ₹1,577 crore with Tata Advanced Systems Limited and Naib Private Limited for the procurement of the ‘Loitering Munition System’. This advanced weapon system is classified as a lethal unmanned drone, commonly referred to as kamikaze drones or suicide drones.
The Ministry of Defence has stated that these systems will be accompanied by necessary ammunition and other support equipment. The contracts were signed in New Delhi in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh. This initiative is expected to bolster the capabilities of the artillery regiments significantly. The ‘Loitering Munition System’ is a critical military asset aimed at enhancing the operational effectiveness of the Indian Army.
According to the Ministry of Defence, this procurement is being fast-tracked under the ‘Buy (Indian)’ category. This means that priority is given to Indian industry participation, facilitating a quicker process. This move is anticipated to provide a substantial boost to the Indian defense industry. The significance of these contracts extends beyond simply modernizing military capabilities; it aims to strengthen the domestic production capacity of defense equipment.
