New Delhi, February 28: The Indian cricket team is set to face the West Indies in a must-win match during the Super-8 round of the T20 World Cup 2026 this Sunday. The victorious team will secure a direct ticket to the semifinals. However, if rain disrupts this crucial match at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, India’s chances could become complicated.
According to ICC regulations, there is no reserve day for any match in the Super-8 round. Thus, if rain becomes a factor, net run rate will play a significant role in determining who advances.
Currently, the West Indies hold a net run rate of +1.791, while India’s net run rate stands at -0.100. This means that in the event of rain, the Caribbean team would advance to the semifinals due to their superior net run rate.
Fortunately for Indian fans, the weather forecast for Kolkata on Sunday indicates a minimal chance of rain. Daytime temperatures are expected to hover around 34 degrees Celsius, dropping to between 25 and 26 degrees during the match.
In their first Super-8 match, India faced a 76-run defeat against South Africa. However, they bounced back impressively on Thursday, defeating Zimbabwe by 72 runs. Batting first, India scored 256 runs for the loss of 4 wickets in 20 overs, marking their highest score in this T20 World Cup. Abhishek Sharma contributed 55 runs, while Hardik Pandya scored an unbeaten 50 off just 23 balls. Tilak Varma also made a significant impact, scoring 44 runs off 16 balls. Zimbabwe, chasing a target of 257 runs, managed only 184 runs for 6 wickets in their 20 overs, with Brian Bennett scoring 97 runs off 59 balls.
In bowling, Arshdeep Singh was outstanding, taking 3 wickets for just 24 runs in 4 overs. Varun Chakravarthy and Axar Patel each claimed one wicket. On the other hand, the West Indies suffered a 9-wicket loss to South Africa in their last match.
