India Launches Cell Broadcast Alert System to Enhance Citizen Safety

New Delhi, May 2: India has launched a cell broadcast service using indigenous technology. In response, Union Minister for Communications and Development of North Eastern Region Jyotiraditya Scindia stated that this initiative is a significant step towards strengthening citizen safety and ensuring rapid information during disasters.

Scindia clarified that the alert received on mobile phones is a test message from India’s new mobile-based disaster communication system, developed by the Department of Telecommunications through cell broadcast technology.

Sharing a photo of the alert on the social media platform ‘X’, Scindia wrote, “If you have received such a message on your mobile, there is no need to panic. This is a test message from India’s new mobile-based disaster communication system, developed by the team at the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT) in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Authority.”

He further added, “In the future, alerts will be sent promptly in local languages and based on location during disasters or emergencies. This initiative is a crucial step towards enhancing citizen safety and ensuring quick information during disasters.”

Earlier, a press release indicated that Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia inaugurated the ‘Cell Broadcast Alert System’ with the guidance and suggestions of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Authority.

This advanced system will enable the rapid transmission of critical information related to disasters, emergencies, and public safety directly to citizens’ mobile phones. A successful test of this system was also conducted nationwide today. The press release mentioned that during the test, emergency alert messages were displayed on citizens’ mobile phones accompanied by a beep sound.
