New Delhi, February 21: Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India and President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of Brazil held a bilateral meeting to discuss strengthening their partnership in the Global South. Several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) were signed between the two nations, and a joint statement was also released.
In his address, PM Modi expressed his delight in welcoming President Lula and his delegation, recalling the warmth with which he was received in Brazil last year. He noted, “It is a matter of special satisfaction for me. The relationship between India and Brazil has long benefited from President Lula’s vision and inspiring connections.”
The Prime Minister mentioned, “Over the past few years, I have had the privilege of meeting him multiple times. Each meeting has reaffirmed his deep friendship and trust towards India. This visit by President Lula has enhanced the prestige of the AI Impact Summit and injected new energy into our strategic partnership. I express my gratitude for his friendship and commitment to our bilateral relations.”
PM Modi highlighted that their discussions focused on advancing shared objectives across all sectors. He stated, “Brazil is India’s largest trade partner in Latin America. We are committed to elevating bilateral trade beyond $20 billion in the next five years. Our trade is not just a figure; it reflects trust. The large business delegation accompanying the President exemplifies this trust. India’s economic cooperation will be further strengthened with the expansion of Mercosur.”
He added, “Our collaboration in technology and innovation is significant for both nations and the entire Global South. We are working on establishing a Center of Excellence for digital public infrastructure in Brazil. We prioritize cooperation in areas such as AI supercomputers, semiconductors, and blockchain. Both countries believe that technology should be inclusive and serve as a bridge for shared development.”
Regarding energy cooperation, the Prime Minister remarked, “Energy collaboration has been a strong pillar of our relationship. Alongside hydrocarbons, we are accelerating cooperation in renewable energy, ethanol blending, and sustainable aviation fuel. Brazil’s active participation in the Global Biofuel Alliance reflects our shared commitment to a green future. Brazil has also proposed co-chairing the coalition for disaster-resilient infrastructure. I congratulate President Lula on this initiative. Brazil’s extensive experience will greatly assist in strengthening the CDRI.”
PM Modi noted that the agreement on critical minerals and rare earths is a significant step in building supply chains. He emphasized that defense cooperation is continuously growing, showcasing mutual trust and strategic alignment. “We will further strengthen this partnership. We are redefining our collaboration in agriculture and animal husbandry to meet future needs, enhancing food security for both nations.”
The Prime Minister stated, “We will take steps to increase the supply of quality medicines from India to Brazil. The expansion of Ayurveda and traditional medicine in Brazil will promote holistic care. The partnership between India and Brazil on the global stage has been powerful and impactful. As democratic nations, we will continue to advance the priorities and aspirations of the Global South. When India and Brazil work together, the voice of the Global South becomes stronger.”
PM Modi concluded by asserting that every problem should be resolved through diplomacy and dialogue. He noted that terrorism is a threat to all humanity. “We agree that terrorism and its supporters are enemies of humanity. Reforming global institutions is crucial to address current challenges. We will continue to work together in this direction. Your visit will deepen our strategic partnership and establish new dimensions of cooperation in the coming years.”
