Rome, May 20: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni held a joint press conference following their bilateral meeting. PM Modi announced the expansion of strategic relations and highlighted the shared heritage as a key reason for their strong ties.
During the announcement of the special strategic partnership, PM Modi stated, “I am pleased to declare that we are upgrading our relations with the announcement of a Special Strategic Partnership. In today’s meeting, we discussed in detail how to strengthen our future partnership. The India-Italy Joint Action Plan 2025-2029 provides a practical and futuristic framework for our collaboration. We are progressing on this in a timely manner.”
He also elaborated on the reasons behind the partnership between Italy and India. “Italy is known globally for design and precision. India is recognized as a powerhouse of scale, talent, and affordable innovation. Therefore, we will advance on the principle of ‘Design and Develop in India and Italy and Deliver for the World.’”
PM Modi emphasized mutual trust as a foundation for collaboration in defense and security sectors. He remarked, “Close cooperation in defense and security symbolizes our deep mutual trust. Collaboration is increasing not only between our armed forces but also between the defense industries of both countries.”
He added, “Our defense industrial roadmap has paved the way for co-development and co-production. As maritime powers, close cooperation between India and Italy in connectivity is natural. We will work together on shipping, port modernization, logistics, and the blue economy. India and Italy agree that terrorism poses a serious challenge to humanity. Our joint initiatives against terror financing present a significant example to the world.”
PM Modi stated that India and Italy have sent a clear message that responsible democracies not only condemn terrorism but also take concrete steps to dismantle its financial networks.
During the address, PM Modi connected India-Italy relations to shared heritage, highlighting the importance of the Indian community residing in Italy as a crucial link in bilateral relations.
He concluded, “The people-to-people connection between our two countries is now evident. There is a similarity in our languages; Sanskrit and Latin belong to the same language family. Thus, our relationship is one of shared heritage. Next year, we will celebrate the 80th anniversary of our relations as the Year of Culture. A notable aspect is that a large number of Indians residing here are a vibrant link in our relationship. I am grateful to PM Meloni and Italy for their support in this regard.”
