India and Cyprus Discuss Enhanced Cooperation on Justice, Extradition, and Consular Issues

Nicosia, April 17: The High Commissioner of India to Cyprus, Manish, met with Cyprus’ Minister of Justice and Public Order, Costas Fitiris, on Friday. The discussion focused on several key issues, including institutional cooperation, extradition, criminal matters, prisoner exchanges, and consular issues related to Indian citizens.

During the meeting, the Indian High Commissioner provided updates on the recent developments in the relationship between India and Cyprus. He also announced that the President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, is scheduled to visit India in May 2026.

He stated, “In this context, both sides discussed various matters related to the Ministry of Justice and Public Order, including institutional cooperation, extradition, criminal cases, prisoner exchanges, and consular issues concerning Indian citizens.”

On April 4, Manish met with President Nikos Christodoulides at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia. They reviewed preparations for the President’s visit to India in May 2026, which is at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

According to the Indian Embassy, both parties also assessed ongoing projects under the India-Cyprus Joint Action Plan, focusing on enhancing cooperation in areas such as trade, investment, innovation, and connectivity. This initiative has progressed since Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Cyprus in June 2025.

The embassy posted on the social media platform ‘X’, stating, “Both countries discussed advancements in crucial areas such as defense and security, renewable energy, digital transformation, fintech, and maritime cooperation. They also emphasized strengthening ties between people through educational and cultural programs.”

Last October, India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with Cyprus’ Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos in New Delhi. They reviewed the India-Cyprus Joint Action Plan for 2025-2029 during their discussions.

Jaishankar expressed his pleasure in welcoming Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos to New Delhi on the social media platform ‘X’. He noted, “We reviewed the India-Cyprus Joint Action Plan for 2025-2029, which was approved by leaders during Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Cyprus in June 2025. Our conversation also included discussions on global conditions and regional issues.”
