New Delhi, July 31: Savitri Thakur, the Minister of State for Women and Child Development, informed the Lok Sabha on Friday that the ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ (BBBP) scheme is effectively addressing the issue of child sex ratio (CSR) across the country.
Citing a recent report from the Health Management Information System (HMIS) of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, she noted that the national sex ratio at birth (SRB) has improved from 918 in 2014-15 to a provisional 929 in 2025-26.
The minister emphasized that the BBBP scheme aims to change attitudes and behaviors towards girls by informing, influencing, inspiring, engaging, and empowering various stakeholders.
She mentioned that during the 15th Finance Commission period, the BBBP scheme has been expanded to all districts under the ‘Sambal’ vertical of the ‘Mission Shakti’ initiative. This expansion includes measures that promote increased spending on grassroots activities that make a tangible impact.
Thakur stated that by uniting government agencies, media, civil society, and the general public, the BBBP has transformed from a policy initiative into a national movement.
Highlighting the impact of the BBBP in Delhi, the central minister reported that the sex ratio at birth in the Union Territory has shown improvement, rising from 901 in 2014-15 to 915 in 2025-26.
According to data from the Ministry of Education’s UDISE, the gross enrollment ratio (GER) for girls at the secondary level has increased nationally from 75.51% in 2014-15 to 83.4% in 2025-26.
In Delhi, the GER for girls in secondary schools has surged from 99.13% in 2014-15 to an impressive 108.3% in 2025-26.
