Ilteja Muftis X Account Banned Amid Controversy

Srinagar, May 11: Ilteja Mufti, daughter of Mehbooba Mufti, the president of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, has had her ‘X’ social media account banned.

The platform stated that the action was taken in response to a legal request. This follows the filing of an FIR against Ilteja Mufti by the Cyber Police of Kashmir after the circulation of video clips featuring the late separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani.

Upon attempting to access her account, users are greeted with a notice indicating that access has been restricted in compliance with legal requests. Typically, such notices are issued by ‘X’ when accounts are blocked or suspended under legal provisions or government directives.

The Cyber Police in Srinagar registered an FIR under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), alleging that certain online content promotes separatist views and could disrupt public order.

Ilteja Mufti has publicly stated that she should be solely held accountable for sharing the videos and urged authorities not to harass those who merely reposted or reacted to her content.

She has consistently criticized actions taken against separatists, advocating that dialogue is the only solution to issues, arguing that punitive measures only harm public relations and foster distrust among the populace.

Ilteja has frequently opposed restrictions imposed by authorities aimed at maintaining law and order, which have included the detention of her mother and other leaders.

In the 2024 assembly elections, she contested from her ancestral town of Bijbehara in Anantnag district but was defeated by Dr. Bashir Ahmad Shah Wani, the candidate from the National Conference (NC).
