Mumbai, September 19 (Daily Kiran) : Mumbai police have registered an Accidental Death Report (ADR) in connection with the death of an IIT Bombay student. The student was discovered dead on Friday evening in the Powai campus. Reports indicate he may have taken his own life after being caught using a mobile phone during an exam.
Authorities confirmed on Saturday that the victim’s family, who reside in Yavatmal, Maharashtra, have been notified. Family members arrived at the Powai police station on Saturday morning to provide statements.
Police officials stated that further action will depend on the statements collected from the family and other students in the campus. As of now, no formal charges have been filed against anyone, and only the ADR has been recorded. The student’s body has been sent for a post-mortem examination.
The deceased has been identified as Sahil Wakode, a second-year student in the Energy Science and Engineering department. According to the institution, Wakode allegedly used to find answers during the exam.
IIT Bombay has clarified that no disciplinary action was initiated against Wakode following the incident. Both the exam instructor and the department head spoke with him, reassuring him that the incident would not adversely affect his career. After their conversation, Wakode returned to his hostel room, where he was later found dead.
In the wake of this tragedy, students on campus organized protests, alleging that the administration had not disclosed all relevant information surrounding the student’s death. Protesters claimed that Wakode had been threatened with a one-year suspension due to the exam incident, which would have required him to leave the campus and reside outside.
