Ian Bishop Praises West Indies Historic Win Against Bangladesh in First Test
Ian Bishop lauds West Indies remarkable victory over Bangladesh in the first Test, highlighting its significance amid financial challenges.

Dhaka, October 31 (Daily Kiran) : West Indies cricket legend Ian Bishop expressed his delight on Saturday following his country’s impressive victory against Bangladesh in the first Test at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium in Mirpur, Dhaka. He hailed the win as significant, particularly as West Indies cricket faces financial difficulties.
The West Indies successfully chased down a target of 170 runs, finishing the match with eight wickets in hand. This victory adds to their recent success, having drawn a five-match T20 series 2-2 against the two-time T20 World Champions, India, on their home turf.
In this Test match, the West Indies showcased a strong performance in the longest format of the game. Bishop commended the team’s efforts, stating on his social media platform, “This is a big win for West Indies cricket. Beating Bangladesh is no easy feat, especially on their home ground. Given the financial challenges cricket faces in this region, the players’ commitment and professionalism deserve recognition. There’s still one more Test to go, but Roston Chase and his team have done an excellent job.”
Former West Indies batsman Darren Ganga also praised the team’s performance, noting that this win continues the momentum from their strong showing in India.
He wrote on social media, “Congratulations to the West Indies men’s Test team on a fantastic 8-wicket victory over Bangladesh in Mirpur. Following their success in the white-ball series in India, the players are adapting well to the red-ball format and demonstrating excellent teamwork. The desire to win is clearly evident in the team.”
Currently, West Indies cricket is grappling with financial challenges. Last month, Cricket West Indies announced a financial restructuring plan that includes a 25% cut in player salaries. Additionally, upcoming tournaments like the Super50 and Women’s T20 Blaze have been postponed. Recently, head coach Darren Sammy urged players to finish the World Test Championship cycle strongly, emphasizing that outstanding performances could aid negotiations with the board.
In the first Test, the West Indies easily achieved the modest target of 170 runs on the fourth day. Brandon King remained not out on 81 runs, while Keemon Hodge contributed 31 runs, leading the team to victory in just 35.1 overs.
Left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican and off-spinner Roston Chase dominated both innings. Bangladesh, batting first, posted 272 runs, with opener Shadman Islam scoring 105 runs. Warrican took five wickets, causing significant trouble for the Bangladeshi batsmen. In response, the West Indies scored 245 runs, thanks to half-centuries from John Campbell and Tagenarine Chanderpaul, along with contributions from Justin Greaves (46) and Chase (43).
Off-spinner Naim Hasan claimed four wickets for 33 runs. In their second innings, Bangladesh was all out for 142 runs, with Chase taking five wickets for 36 runs and Warrican claiming four for 63. The visiting team then comfortably chased the target, losing just two wickets.
