New Delhi, May 1: NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope has captured a breathtaking image of a spiral galaxy, sparkling with clusters of stars. This galaxy, known as NGC 3137, is located approximately 53 million light-years from Earth in the Antlia constellation.
This nearby spiral galaxy is crucial for astronomers as it provides an exceptional opportunity to study the entire cycle of star birth and death. It also offers a glimpse into systems similar to our Milky Way. NGC 3137 is part of a group that closely resembles the Local Group, which includes our Milky Way and the Andromeda galaxy. This group features two large spiral galaxies, NGC 3137 and NGC 3175, along with several smaller dwarf galaxies.
Researchers are exploring the possibility of over 500 dwarf galaxies within the NGC 3175 group. By studying this group, scientists can gain a deeper understanding of galaxy dynamics and behavior. The Hubble Telescope has produced a detailed image of NGC 3137 across six different color bands. The galaxy’s center appears surrounded by dusty clouds, housing a supermassive black hole estimated to be about 60 million times the mass of our Sun.
The galaxy is tilted at an angle from our viewpoint, revealing its loose, feather-like spiral arms. The most captivating aspect is its dense clusters of bright blue stars and glowing clouds of red gas. These red clouds indicate the presence of hot, young stars still nestled in their birth nebulae, which are the primary focus of Hubble’s observations.
Led by Professor D. Thilker, a team is conducting an observing program that studies star clusters in 55 nearby galaxies. This initiative is part of the PHANGS-HST program, which integrates Hubble’s optical and ultraviolet data with observations from the James Webb Space Telescope and ALMA. This collaboration enables astronomers to conduct a profound and unparalleled study of the life cycles of stars in spiral galaxies, from the birth of young stars to ancient star clusters.
