Mumbai, February 28: In India, the day often begins with a cup of tea. It serves as a remedy for fatigue and a reason for social interaction. Morning tea with the newspaper, tea during office breaks, and evening tea with family are common practices in many households. However, excessive tea consumption can lead to health issues. Both Ayurveda and science agree that too much tea can disrupt the body’s balance.

According to scientific guidelines, two to three cups of tea per day are sufficient for a healthy individual. A typical cup of tea contains around thirty milligrams of caffeine. Consuming too much tea throughout the day can increase caffeine levels in the body. Excessive caffeine can directly affect the brain and sleep patterns, leading to restlessness, anxiety, and insomnia. Some individuals may even experience slight tremors in their hands and feet, indicating heightened caffeine pressure on the body.

Tea also contains tannins, which can hinder iron absorption. Drinking tea immediately after or during meals can prevent the body from fully absorbing the iron from food. Over time, this can lead to iron deficiency anemia. Experts recommend consuming tea at least one hour before or after meals to avoid this issue.

From an Ayurvedic perspective, tea is considered to have a heating nature. Drinking too much tea can increase internal heat, resulting in acidity, gas, and heartburn. Particularly, consuming tea on an empty stomach is deemed most harmful. Morning tea on an empty stomach can disrupt digestive fire, potentially leading to imbalances in metabolism and feelings of heaviness or nausea throughout the day.

While milk and sugar in tea are not harmful in moderation, excessive amounts can lead to weight gain. Sugar adds extra calories, and frequent consumption of milk tea can contribute to unnecessary fat accumulation in the body. Therefore, individuals aiming to lose weight or manage diabetes should pay close attention to both the quantity of tea and the amount of sugar added.
