Chennai, 3 January. The first phase of the Men’s Hockey India League 2026 is set to be played in Chennai. On Sunday, Surma Hockey Club will take on the reigning champions Bengal Tigers. Surma Hockey Club captain Harmanpreet Singh has stated that his team is fully prepared to meet every challenge posed by Bengal.

Harmanpreet Singh said, “We are calm, clear, and ready to compete against the champions. We have confidence in the work we have put in. Most of the team members have played together before, which helps us stay composed and focused. Applying pressure, converting our chances into goals, and making the right decisions at crucial moments are very important.”

He added, “The Hockey India League is a big platform for us as the coming year will be busy. We want to use this opportunity to build rhythm and confidence.”

Surma Hockey Club’s head coach Philip Goldberg said, “When you face the defending champions, every phase of the game matters. Our focus has been on controlling transitions, staying patient without the ball, and making correct decisions when chances arise. Consistency in this squad gives us confidence and helps us prepare with purpose rather than uncertainty. We are ready to face the opponent’s challenge calmly and with trust in our game from the very first match.”

Surma Hockey Club has retained its key players for the season. During training, the team has focused on strengthening itself. Emphasis has been placed on effective management against opponents and making better decisions in the circle, especially during penalty corners.

The Hockey India League is starting on Saturday.
