Shimla, August 6: The Himachal Pradesh government has made a pivotal decision aimed at strengthening healthcare services. Chief Minister Sukhu approved a substantial 78% salary increase for contract and trainee medical officers (specialists) on Wednesday.
With this decision, the monthly salary has risen from ₹33,660 to ₹60,000. Previously, following the implementation of the sixth pay commission recommendations in 2022, the salary for trainee medical officers (specialists) had increased by approximately 24%, from ₹27,000 to ₹33,660.
Now, the state government has sanctioned a 78% salary hike, significantly benefiting these specialists. A government statement indicated that this decision is expected to encourage specialist doctors to serve in government health institutions, thereby ensuring the availability of quality healthcare services in remote areas of the state.
The state government is taking steps to strengthen the healthcare sector so that residents can access better treatment and modern medical facilities close to home, reducing the need to travel outside the state for healthcare.
In line with this initiative, the state government had previously increased the monthly stipends for postgraduate (PG) medical students studying in government medical colleges. The stipend for first-year PG students has been raised from ₹40,000 to ₹50,000, for second-year students from ₹45,000 to ₹60,000, and for third-year students from ₹50,000 to ₹65,000.
Medical students pursuing postgraduate studies play a crucial role in patient care alongside their academic education. Recognizing their responsibilities, the state government has increased their stipends to motivate them to provide better healthcare services.
Similarly, considering the significant roles of senior residents and other specialist doctors in medical colleges, the state government has also increased their monthly stipends by 50% to 170%.
