Maharajganj, August 27: Following severe floods in Nepal, the district administration in Maharajganj, Uttar Pradesh, has declared a high alert. District Magistrate Gaurav Singh Sogarwal and Superintendent of Police Shakti Awasthi inspected the Gandak River by boat.
Rescue team sub-inspector Saurabh Dhar Dubey stated, “Our SSB RRT has been deployed since Wednesday. We have two boats, life jackets, and lifebuoys for the rescue operation. If we find any bodies or belongings, we will immediately inform the local administration. So far, nothing has been found. However, we have alerted two fishermen in the area, advising them not to venture out for the next two to three days due to fluctuating water levels.”
Superintendent of Police Shakti Awasthi reported, “Around 9 AM on Wednesday, a sudden flood occurred at the Tibet-Nepal border. This has caused water levels to rise in downstream rivers and tributaries, particularly the Narayani and Trishuli rivers. We are continuously camping at the site. SDRF and PAC personnel have been deployed in areas of Maharajganj, especially Sohagi Barwa and Nichlaul. Additionally, we are conducting regular patrols with the SSB and have issued all necessary directives.”
District Magistrate Gaurav Singh Sogarwal added, “The flood incident occurred around 9:00 AM on Wednesday. The Bhotekoshi River is part of the Trishuli river system, and since Trishuli is a tributary of the Narayani River, the water level in the Narayani is likely to rise significantly. We monitored the situation until late Wednesday night. Approximately 150,000 cusecs of water reached the Valmiki Barrage overnight, but it has stabilized now. Still, our team remains alert.”
Mau District Magistrate Anand Vardhan mentioned, “In light of the tragedy in Nepal, a state-level alert has been issued, focusing primarily on Kushinagar, Maharajganj, and Deoria districts, where continuous monitoring is in place. There is currently no direct impact from the Gandak River in Mau, so there is no cause for concern. However, we are maintaining vigilance as a precaution.”
