Heavy Rain Forecast for Nine Districts in Tamil Nadu Until September 20

Chennai, September 15 (Daily Kiran) : The Regional Meteorological Centre has warned of heavy rainfall across nine districts in Tamil Nadu, with conditions expected to persist until September 20. Areas including Nilgiri and Coimbatore may experience strong winds coupled with heavy rain during this period.

A low-pressure area stretching from southern interior Karnataka to the southwest Bay of Bengal is influencing the weather across the state. The districts forecasted to receive significant rainfall include Nilgiri, Coimbatore, Erode, Salem, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Vellore, Tirupattur, and Ranipet.

Moderate rain accompanied by thunder is also likely in Madurai, Dindigul, Virudhunagar, and Sivagangai. On Wednesday, heavy rainfall is anticipated in Tiruvannamalai, Vellore, Tirupattur, and Ranipet, as well as in the Cauvery Delta regions of Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai, and Nagapattinam. Chennai may see moderate rain in the evening or night.

The Meteorological Department has cautioned that maximum temperatures in some inland areas of Tamil Nadu could exceed normal levels by up to three degrees Celsius.

Following widespread rain across the state, several incidents related to the weather have been reported. In Perambalur district, heavy rain and thunderstorms caused sudden flooding in fields and drains near Adakkampatti village, trapping several individuals who had ventured into the hills. Local residents used ropes to rescue them.

Tragically, two individuals lost their lives due to lightning strikes. A 25-year-old laborer from Odisha, Sonuram Kond, died while working on a borewell project near Reddiarchatram in Dindigul district. In another incident, a mason named Kasirajan was killed by lightning while working at a construction site near Krishnapuram in Tenkasi district.

In Madurai district, a large tree uprooted by heavy rain fell on an electric pole near Sholavandan, prompting an immediate power shutdown as a safety measure. The removal of the fallen tree caused a power outage for over two hours, inconveniencing local residents.

Flooding on the streets of Virudhunagar disrupted daily life, with rainwater inundating several shops, causing distress for both residents and business owners.

Conversely, moderate rainfall brought relief to many areas in Theni district. After more than three hours of steady rain in Kodaikanal and surrounding regions, the weather turned cooler. Similarly, a significant downpour lasting about an hour occurred in Paramakudi, Ramnathapuram district, providing much-needed respite from the humid conditions.
