Heavy Rain Forces School Closures in Chennai and Surrounding Districts

Heavy rains lead to school closures in Chennai and nearby districts as authorities assess the situation.

Chennai, October 21 (Daily Kiran) : In Chennai, schools were closed on Wednesday due to severe weather conditions affecting the city and several districts in Tamil Nadu. The decision came as a precaution amid continuous rainfall. N. Anand, the state’s Minister for Water Resources, inspected drainage operations in the T. Nagar bus terminus area alongside local officials.

Since last night, intermittent rain has been reported in Chennai and surrounding districts including Thiruvallur, Kanchipuram, and Chengalpattu. This has raised concerns about students commuting to school. Local district administrations ordered schools to remain closed based on the prevailing rainfall conditions.

Following heavy overnight rain, District Collector S. Malathi Helen announced the closure of schools in Chennai. Similarly, Thiruvallur Collector Kavita issued a closure order, citing ongoing rain. Collectors in Kanchipuram and Chengalpattu also made similar announcements after experiencing significant rainfall in their areas.

The weather department has indicated that heavy rain is expected to continue, prompting concerns about travel during the morning commute. As a result, classes were suspended for the day.

According to meteorological forecasts, a low-pressure area is likely to form over the southwest Bay of Bengal and the adjacent Tamil Nadu coast. This system could significantly impact Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal, leading to heavy to very heavy rainfall in some areas.

Forecasts suggest that another low-pressure area may develop around October 23 in the Bay of Bengal, potentially affecting the current rainfall pattern. However, the actual rainfall will depend on the formation and movement of this system.

The weather department has indicated that this rainy spell could last until October 26. With conditions expected to remain wet for several days, district administrations will need to evaluate local situations before making further decisions regarding school operations.
