Shimla, September 2: A heavy rain alert has been issued for Kangra, Sirmaur, and Mandi districts in Himachal Pradesh. In the past 24 hours, several areas have recorded significant rainfall.
Sandeep Sharma, a scientist at the Meteorological Center in Shimla, stated, “Rainfall has occurred across Himachal Pradesh in the last 24 hours. Heavy rain was recorded in various areas of Bilaspur, and some parts of Kangra also experienced heavy downpours. Light rain was observed in Lahaul-Spiti and Kinnaur, while moderate rain was noted in other regions. The highest rainfall was approximately 180 mm in Bilaspur, followed by about 100 mm in Kasauli and 90 mm at one station in Kangra.”
Sharma added, “The monsoon has been quite active over the past 24 hours. Rainfall will continue in the plains from September 2 to 5. Light to moderate rain, with heavy rain in some areas, is expected in Kangra, Sirmaur, and Mandi. A heavy rain alert is in effect for Kangra and Sirmaur on Thursday. Light to moderate rain will persist in the state on September 4-5, with moderate rain continuing on September 6. Scattered showers are expected on September 7 and 8.”
He further noted that the state has recorded 8% less rainfall than normal so far. Lahaul-Spiti has seen a 60% deficit, while Hamirpur and Mandi have recorded 30% and 18% less rainfall, respectively. Conversely, Shimla has experienced 16% more rain than usual, and Kullu has seen a 14% increase.
Sandeep Sharma advised that the rainfall will continue until September 5, raising the likelihood of sudden water level increases in rivers and reservoirs. He urged people to avoid areas near rivers and streams and to check the state government’s advisories before traveling.
