Kolkata, February 14: The hearing on objections and claims regarding the draft voter list in West Bengal concluded on Saturday evening. It was determined that an additional 498,000 names are eligible for removal from the final voter list.

These 498,000 voters failed to attend the hearing sessions despite multiple notices. Consequently, they were deemed ineligible for inclusion in the final voter list.

As of Friday evening, the number of voters who did not participate in the hearings was 625,000. However, on the last day of hearings, over 100,000 voters attended, reducing the total to 498,000 by Saturday evening.

A source from the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal reported that during the census phase, over 5.8 million voters were found ineligible, including deceased, duplicate, and relocated voters. Their names were removed from the draft voter list published last December.

The additional 498,000 names identified during the hearing phase will now be added to this total. However, the final count of removed names will only be confirmed after the publication of the final voter list on February 28.

According to a source from the Chief Minister’s office, the verification of supporting identification documents submitted by attending voters will continue until February 21. During this process, names of voters presenting invalid or unverified identification documents may also be removed. The final status will be clarified after the publication of the final voter list on February 28.

Reports indicate that the highest number of absent voters was in North 24 Parganas district, with approximately 138,000 missing. This was followed by South 24 Parganas with around 46,000, and the Kolkata (South) constituency, where about 22,000 voters were absent.

The lowest number of absent voters was recorded in Kalimpong district, with only 440 missing.
