Senior Congress leader Harish Rawat has responded to Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami’s statement regarding the Ankita Bhandari case, in which the CM assured that securing justice for Ankita is the government’s highest priority. While appreciating the government’s approval for a CBI probe, Rawat emphasised that the investigation should be conducted under the supervision of a Supreme Court judge.
The demand for a CBI inquiry into the Ankita Bhandari case had been persistent, and Chief Minister Dhami has now agreed to it. The case will officially be investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation.
CM Dhami stated that Ankita’s parents had requested a CBI probe during their meeting, and respecting their demand, the government decided to entrust the investigation to the CBI. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting and respecting women, asserting that law and order prevails in Uttarakhand and that culprits will not be spared under any circumstances.
Speaking from Rishikesh, Harish Rawat said the decision came as a result of public pressure from the people of Uttarakhand, who collectively demanded a CBI investigation under the supervision of a Supreme Court judge. He welcomed the government’s acceptance of this demand.
Rawat further stressed that without the oversight of a Supreme Court judge, the investigation’s findings would not be conclusive. He insisted that the probe must be conducted under such supervision to ensure transparency and justice. Additionally, he called for FIRs against those who destroyed evidence, stating that only when these individuals come under investigation will the truth come to light. This, he said, will reveal the reasons behind Ankita’s murder.
The senior Congress leader also highlighted that the identities of those protected by political power will eventually be exposed. Until the full truth is uncovered, the fight for justice will continue unabated.
