Gujarats Swift Justice: 1,785 POCSO Cases Resolved in Five Years

Gujarat courts have resolved 1,785 POCSO cases in five years, with 908 receiving life sentences and 16 death penalties.

Gandhinagar, October 19 (Daily Kiran) : In a significant move towards protecting children from sexual offenses, Gujarat has seen a rapid resolution of POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) cases. Between 2022 and August 2026, the state’s POCSO courts delivered verdicts in 1,785 cases. The statistics reveal that 908 offenders were sentenced to life imprisonment, while 16 received the death penalty.

The state government is emphasizing swift investigations, timely charge sheets, and prompt hearings to ensure justice for victims. Under its zero-tolerance policy against child sexual offenses, the government has prioritized the appointment of special public prosecutors for serious cases and has stressed the importance of filing charge sheets without delay.

Makarand Chauhan, the DIG of Law and Order in Gandhinagar, highlighted the crucial role of effective prosecution in securing convictions. He explained that if a police unit suspects a case under POCSO is particularly severe, they can recommend the appointment of a special public prosecutor to the state police headquarters.

The appointment of special prosecutors aids in effectively presenting cases in court. The government is also increasing the number of public prosecutors across districts to further bolster this effort.

Data shows a consistent increase in the speed of resolutions and sentences in POCSO cases in Gujarat. In 2022, there were 194 verdicts, with 107 offenders sentenced to life. This number rose significantly in 2025, with 499 cases resolved and 340 offenders receiving life sentences.

As of August 2026, 346 cases had been resolved, leading to 241 life sentences. Notably, in August alone, 48 POCSO cases resulted in sentences, with 35 offenders receiving life imprisonment.

Nayan Sukhadwala, a public prosecutor at the Surat District and Sessions Court, emphasized the importance of timely charge sheet submissions. Delays can lead to defendants obtaining default bail, which can undermine the prosecution’s case. He noted that prompt filing of charge sheets should be coupled with swift trials, as the passage of time can affect witness memory and statements, complicating the judicial process.

Over the past five years, the pace of filing charge sheets in POCSO-related cases has been closely monitored. Records indicate that charge sheets were filed within 1 to 15 days in 140 cases, and 1,339 cases were completed within 16 to 30 days. The highest number, 5,463 cases, saw charge sheets filed within 31 to 45 days.

These statistics underscore the importance of timely investigations and case monitoring in Gujarat. Enhanced coordination among police investigations, prosecution preparations, and expedited court hearings is being prioritized to ensure efficiency in handling POCSO cases.
