Gujarat cops in civvies mistaken as child lifters, thrashed by Banswara villagers

‘Cops were masked, no number plate on car’

Udaipur : Mistaken for child lifters, a visiting Gujarat Police team in plain clothes had to face the mob fury in Kushalgarh of Banswara district on Wednesday night. They escaped after some senior residents intervened and locked the cops in a room and then informed the local police which came to their rescue. Among the victims include a sub inspector, a head constable, a constable and a civilian who had come in the village to arrest some accused in a theft case. ” It is a tradition that any police team visiting an alien land informs the local station of their arrival but the Gujarat team had given no such information. They went directly to the village where the confusion might have arisen. One of the cop has sustained injury on his head while others are stable. A case has been registered against unknown persons on their complaint” Banswara SP Kesar Singh Shekhawat told Udaipur Kiran.

The incident took place on Wednesday when the team from Pardi police station of Valsad district in Gujarat, reached in Bassi village of Saran panchayat under Kushalgarh police station limits, in connection with a 15-lakh theft case. The villagers told the local police that the suspected men were in a car which had no number plate. They were in civil dress and all of them had covered their faces with handkerchiefs. The suspicion was raised when the men stopped the car and spoke to some children instead of speaking to adults. Dozens of people from surrounding area gathered at the spot and the infuriated mob thrashed the team. When the policemen showed their identity cards, people disbelieved them, however, some of the senior citizens intervened and convinced the people to lock the visitors in a room until local police arrived.

SHO Hanuwant Singh and team went to the village and took the Gujarat team to Kushalgarh police station. “They had come to look for some accused in Karmadiya village on the basis of mobile location. As a precautionary measure , they had removed the number plate of the car of Gujarat registration so that the accused people do not flee, however there was some confusion and the villagers mistook them. A case has been registered on their complaint on Thursday, no one has been detained so far” Shekhawat informed.
