GPS Requirement for Mineral Transport Trucks in Tamil Nadu Takes Effect
Tamil Nadu mandates GPS installation for mineral transport trucks, linking permits to compliance starting November 1, 2026.

Chennai, November 1 (Daily Kiran) : The Tamil Nadu government has made it mandatory for trucks transporting minerals to be equipped with GPS devices. Starting November 1, 2026, vehicles must have AIS 140 standard GPS systems to obtain transport permits or transit passes. This regulation was announced by the Department of Geology and Mining, following the expiration of the extended deadline on October 31.
All vehicles involved in mineral transport must install tracking devices that connect to the department’s online portal. The government has warned of strict actions against violations. Trucks without GPS devices or valid permits will be subject to inspections, and offenders may face criminal charges.
This initiative aims to curb illegal mining and unauthorized movement of minerals. By linking vehicles to a digital system, the department seeks to enhance monitoring of transportation and prevent unauthorized transit of minerals.
Operators are required to install AIS 140 compliant GPS devices and integrate them with the Mineral Management System (MIMAS). Merely installing the devices is insufficient; they must also connect to the department’s portal.
The deadline for compliance has been extended multiple times. Initially set for March 31, 2026, the government planned to stop issuing transit passes to vehicles without GPS by September 1. However, the deadline was pushed to September 30 and then to October 31, allowing vehicle owners more time to complete the installation and linking process. With this grace period now over, the permit restrictions are in effect.
As of November 1, the new rule directly ties transport documentation to GPS compliance. Truck owners seeking permits or transit passes for mineral transport must ensure their vehicles meet both installation and online integration requirements.
