Giving priority to fill up vacancies of Judges, improve infra : CJI

Hyderabad, April 15 : Chief Justice of India N V Ramana on Friday said that with the Judiciary being overburdened, he is giving top-most priority to fill up the vacancies of Judges and improve the Judicial infrastructure for speedy disposal of cases. Addressing the inaugural session of the two-day Telangana State Judicial Officers Conference-2022 here, Justice Ramana said that access to justice is possible only when we provide a sufficient number of courts as well as infrastructure so that litigants can approach institutions for justice. The CJI said that due to the high pendency of cases and shortage in judges, there is a feeling that a litigant gets justice from court only after many years. Wherever you go, the first question is ‘how many days does it take to decide a case?, he said, adding, We must appoint as many judges as possible and I do not wish to keep even one vacancy neither in the High Court nor in the Supreme Court or district judiciary.” The CJI also highlighted that a detailed survey was conducted by the Supreme Court registry in different parts of the country and courts where it was found that infrastructure is inadequate. He told the judicial officers of districts to “create congenial atmosphere” for litigants and “remember human aspect” while adjudicating cases. Justice Ramana also emphasized that we should try to empathise with members of minorities and weaker sections of the society and “Treat everyone with respect.” The Chief Justice said that the judiciary “was a check on excesses of executives”, and so the judicial officers need to keep themselves updated with the changes in law and keep abreast of the developments in other sectors like science and technology. He thanked Chief Minister K.Chandrashekar Rao for sanctioning posts in the judiciary and quick response in extending all facilities to the Judicial officers. Telangana High Court Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma said there are eight lakh pending cases in district courts in the state. He said that “better and modern judicial infrastructure” was the need of the hour for speedy disposal of the cases. The judicial officers are required to play a pro-active role in clearing piled up pending cases, Justice Sharma added. Chandrashekar Rao while thanking CJI for increasing the number of judges in Telangana High Court, announced that the government will build residential quarters for all the judges of the High Court near Durgam Cheruvu in the Financial District and requested the CJI to lay foundation stone for the same. Minister for Law A Indrakaran Reddy was also present. KNR CS1454
