The New York Giants have formally requested an interview with Darren Rizzi, the special teams coordinator and assistant head coach of the Denver Broncos, for their vacant head coaching position.
Rizzi, 55, is well known to Giants’ general manager Joe Schoen, with whom he worked closely during their time at the Miami Dolphins. From 2009 to 2017, Rizzi served as the Dolphins’ special teams coach while Schoen held roles ranging from national scout to director of player personnel.
Rizzi began his NFL coaching career in 2009 with the Dolphins as assistant special teams coach, quickly rising to special teams coordinator in 2010. In 2017, he was promoted to associate head coach. After the Dolphins hired Brian Flores in 2019 and did not retain Rizzi, he joined Sean Payton’s staff with the New Orleans Saints. He continued as assistant head coach under Dennis Allen and was named interim head coach when Allen was dismissed in 2024.
Rizzi reunited with Sean Payton in Denver in 2025. Alongside Rizzi, the Giants have also requested an interview with Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph. Meanwhile, the Las Vegas Raiders and Baltimore Ravens have sought interviews with Davis Webb, former Giants quarterback and current Broncos quarterbacks coach, for their head coaching vacancies.
This interview request makes Rizzi the eighth former head coach candidate the Giants have shown interest in. The complete list includes Mike Kafka, Kevin Stefanski, John Harbaugh, Vance Joseph, Raheem Morris, Mike McCarthy, Antonio Pierce, and Darren Rizzi.
Additionally, the Giants have sought interviews with Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak and Indianapolis Colts defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo as part of their head coach selection process.
