Gautam Adani Emphasizes Trust as the Greatest Asset Beyond Hindenburg Controversy

Ahmedabad, August 12: Just two days after the U.S. Department of Justice permanently dismissed the criminal case against him, Gautam Adani, Chairman of the Adani Group, expressed that the experiences of the past two years have made him more humble. He stated that this journey has reinforced his belief in standing firm on one’s truth and respecting the judicial process with patience and dignity.

Speaking at the second edition of the ‘Apni Baat, Apnon Ke Saath’ program, held in preparation for India’s 80th Independence Day celebrations, Adani addressed over three lakh employees and partners connected across 700 locations of the group. He referenced the allegations from Hindenburg Research that emerged in 2023 and the subsequent legal proceedings. However, his primary focus remained on the values that strengthen an institution during challenging times.

Recalling his early journey, Adani shared that leaving home at the age of 16 to start a business from scratch in Mumbai taught him that trust cannot be demanded or inherited. It must be earned through character, consistency, and keeping one’s word.

He illustrated his point using the Indian mythological tale of ‘Samudra Manthan,’ stating that every significant journey of a person, institution, or nation goes through tough circumstances and challenges, revealing true strength.

Adani highlighted a crucial decision made by the group following the Hindenburg report. He explained that while the group could have legally proceeded with its fully subscribed ₹20,000 crore Follow-on Public Offer (FPO), it chose to return the investors’ money instead. This decision was made to protect investor trust rather than merely exercising a legal right.

He emphasized that this lesson came from his father: trust is greater than any legal entitlement. The decision to return investors’ capital was based on this principle.

Regarding the conclusion of the case with the U.S. Department of Justice, Adani stated that the process has further strengthened his faith in the rule of law. He described it not just as a legal victory but as an important journey in understanding leadership, responsibility, and patience.

However, he noted that the most impressive aspect during this period was not the court proceedings, but the calm and unwavering dedication of the people he worked with. Even when the case was in the global spotlight, employees, laborers, suppliers, contractors, vendors, and partners continued their work with full commitment.

He praised the engineers for their ongoing project work, the teams for maintaining execution focus, and the seamless operations across the group’s various businesses. Adani regarded this collective resolve as the group’s greatest strength.

The impact of this commitment was evident in the group’s business performance. The Adani Group’s capital expenditure reached ₹1.53 lakh crore last year, marking one of the largest investments in the Indian corporate sector. The group continued to invest in sectors such as ports, airports, logistics, renewable energy, transmission, digital infrastructure, and manufacturing.

Yet, Gautam Adani asserted that financial figures alone do not tell the complete story of an organization. He believes that his greatest achievement and source of pride is the ‘Adani Family,’ which includes millions connected to the group.

In his address, he also expressed gratitude towards the common people. He mentioned that many individuals across the country, whom he did not know personally, reached out to encourage him, shake hands, or show their support.

Adani also acknowledged his critics, stating that tough questions provided an opportunity for introspection. According to him, criticism inspired the organization to become more responsible and grounded.

Looking ahead to the centenary of India’s independence in 2047, he urged employees and partners to reflect on how our generation will be remembered. He stated that India’s evaluation will not only be based on the infrastructure it builds but also on the opportunities, strong communities, and values it fosters.

In closing, Gautam Adani remarked that an institution’s identity is not defined solely by the crises it faces but by the values it upholds during those crises. He asserted that in the journey toward a ‘Developed India,’ the country’s greatest legacy will not just be physical infrastructure but institutions that earn trust, face challenges, and bequeath a better future to the coming generations.
