Guwahati, February 25: Assam Congress President and Lok Sabha member Gaurav Gogoi has been nominated as the Chair of the India-Philippines Parliamentary Friendship Group. During this announcement, he responded to comments made by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, stating that there is no need for a serious reaction to the Chief Minister’s remarks.

Gogoi addressed reporters, emphasizing that the Chief Minister’s role should focus on governance and public welfare, rather than making political comments on parliamentary appointments. He remarked that the Chief Minister’s statements do not warrant serious consideration and that there is no need to give undue importance to such remarks.

In response to Sarma’s comment suggesting that Gogoi should have been assigned a ‘Pakistan-related responsibility,’ Gogoi stated that such statements merely reflect the political mindset of the ruling party. He added, “I am not someone who reacts to every political statement. My responsibility lies with Parliament and the people who elected me.”

He stressed that parliamentary friendship groups are formed through established institutional processes, aimed at strengthening India’s global parliamentary engagement. Gogoi further noted that the formation of the friendship group with the Philippines is intended to promote cooperation and dialogue between the two democratic nations. He affirmed that this is a responsibility entrusted by the Lok Sabha, and he will fulfill it with utmost sincerity.

Gogoi also highlighted that leaders should focus on issues related to employment, education, inflation, and the overall development of Assam, rather than getting entangled in political rhetoric. He stated, “The people of Assam seek solutions to real problems. They are not interested in political jibes or distractions.”

He concluded by saying that both inside and outside Parliament, his work speaks for itself. “I believe in constructive cooperation and responsible politics.” Recently, the Lok Sabha Secretariat appointed Gogoi as the Chair of the India-Philippines Parliamentary Friendship Group for the 18th Lok Sabha.
