Bulandshahr, May 19: A notorious gangster involved in temple thefts was arrested following a police encounter in the Jahangirabad area. During the exchange of fire, the suspect sustained a gunshot wound to the leg and has since been hospitalized.
The incident occurred near the Jasra Bambe bridge in the Jahangirabad police jurisdiction. Acting on a tip-off, police were alerted to the presence of Himanshu, a member of a gang known for stealing from temples. When police attempted to stop a suspicious motorcycle, the suspect opened fire. In self-defense, the police returned fire, injuring Himanshu in the leg.
Himanshu, son of Prahlad, is a resident of the Siali Nagar village in the Aahar police area. Authorities report that he has over 25 criminal cases registered against him and is considered a skilled thief targeting temples.
From Himanshu’s possession, police recovered 400 grams of silver, a stolen motorcycle, and an illegal firearm.
Superintendent of Police, Antariksh Jain, stated, “A few days ago, two temples in the Jahangirabad area were robbed. Silver umbrellas, crowns, inverter batteries, and cash were stolen. With the help of CCTV footage and technical surveillance, we had previously arrested two members of this gang, Ankit (son of Satpal Singh) and Rasik (son of Kamal Singh).”
The SP added, “During interrogation, both admitted to participating in several thefts with Himanshu. Acting on the informant’s tip, our team conducted a check. The suspect fired at the police, prompting them to return fire. He is currently injured and receiving treatment. Further investigations are ongoing.”
Police have hailed this encounter as a significant success against temple thieves. Two of Himanshu’s accomplices have already been imprisoned. Authorities are now focused on locating other gang members and the whereabouts of the stolen goods.
