Mumbai, August 24: The rising waters of the Ganga River have wreaked havoc in Bhagalpur, Bihar. Late Sunday night, around 2:30 AM, the Kajikoreya-Raghopur embankment in the Naugachia area collapsed. The breach, spanning approximately 50 meters, allowed floodwaters to rapidly inundate residential areas.
The Raghopur locality has been hit hardest by this disaster. This area is home to Bihar’s Energy Minister Shailesh Kumar, also known as Bulo Mandal. As the embankment broke, floodwaters surged into the minister’s residence, submerging the entire vicinity.
Upon receiving news of the incident, Bhagalpur’s District Magistrate and senior disaster management officials rushed to the scene. The administration has initiated emergency safety measures and is actively engaged in flood-fighting efforts to protect the embankment. However, the continuously rising water levels of the Ganga are significantly hindering repair work.
A local resident recounted, “We were sleeping on a cot in the fields near Durga Sthan when we heard people shouting from the direction of the embankment. We immediately went to check and found that it had indeed collapsed.”
In Patna, Bihar government minister Ramkripal Yadav expressed his concern over the situation. He stated, “Every year, floods wreak havoc in Bihar. The breach of the Bhagalpur embankment is alarming. The pressure of the water was so immense that the embankment gave way. I trust that the government will take necessary steps and do whatever it can to rebuild the embankment.”
Currently, the administration’s team is monitoring the situation and is engaged in relief efforts. The breach has heightened the flood risk for several villages in Naugachia.
