
New Delhi, May 5: Gagan Narang is a revered name in the field of shooting in India. He has brought glory to the nation by winning medals at the Olympics, Commonwealth Games, and World Cups.
Born on May 6, 1983, in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, Narang hails from a Punjabi Hindu family. His family originates from Shimla Gujran village in Panipat district, Haryana. Due to his father’s job, Bhimsen Narang, the family moved to Hyderabad, where Gagan was raised. He pursued a Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA) from Osmania University in Hyderabad. Narang began his shooting journey in 1997 when his father gifted him an air pistol.
Looking at Narang’s career, he won a gold medal in the men’s 10-meter air rifle event at the Afro-Asian Games in Hyderabad on October 26, 2003. He later secured a gold medal in the air rifle event at the 2006 World Cup. Narang also claimed four gold medals at the 2006 Commonwealth Games.
In 2008, after winning a gold medal at the World Cup in China, he qualified for the ISSF World Cup Final. He scored 103.5 in the final round, achieving a total score of 703.5 and setting a world record. On November 4, 2008, he broke the record set by Austria’s Thomas Farnik at the 2006 World Cup Final in Granada, Spain. Narang won four gold medals at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi and secured a silver medal at the 2010 Asian Games.
The 2012 London Olympics marked a historic achievement for Narang. He won a bronze medal in the 10-meter air rifle event with a total score of 701.1. At the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, he earned a silver medal in the 50-meter rifle prone and a bronze medal in the 50-meter rifle three positions.
For his remarkable contributions to shooting, the Government of India honored Narang with the Padma Shri in 2011. Prior to this, he was awarded the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award in 2010, presented to him by then-President Pratibha Patil on August 29, 2011. Narang was also invited to wave the checkered flag at the 2012 Indian Grand Prix by the organizers.
