
New Delhi, February 11: In recent years, boxing has emerged as one of the most popular sports in India. Both male and female Indian boxers have achieved remarkable success on the global stage, bringing pride to the nation. Among these athletes is Mohammad Husamuddin.
Born on February 12, 1994, in Nizamabad, Telangana, Husamuddin grew up in a boxing environment. His father, Mohammad Shamsuddin, is not only a boxer but also a renowned coach. He has been running a boxing training center in Nizamabad for many years and has coached the world-famous female boxer Nikhat Zareen.
Boxing was not new to Husamuddin, as four of his six brothers have also been boxers. Initially, his father wanted him to pursue gymnastics; however, the family atmosphere inspired Husamuddin to take up boxing. After entering the sport, he achieved significant success, making his family proud.
Competing in the 56 and 57-kilogram weight categories, Husamuddin won a bronze medal at the inaugural India International Open Boxing Championship in New Delhi. He also secured a bronze medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games held in Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia. At the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games, he again earned a bronze medal in the men’s 57-kilogram featherweight category.
While boxing for the Services team, Husamuddin has dominated the men’s bantamweight (56 kg) and featherweight (57 kg) categories. He has won three gold medals and one silver medal in the last five national championships.
For his outstanding achievements in boxing, Husamuddin was honored with the Arjuna Award in 2023.
