Kolkata, August 14: Former Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Nirmal Ghosh has been remanded to 14 days of judicial custody by a district court. This decision comes in connection with a major conspiracy linked to the rape and murder of a junior female doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in August 2024.
Ghosh faces serious allegations, including being one of the three key individuals who arranged for the victim’s body to be hastily cremated at a crematorium in Panihati. It is claimed that this was done in violation of cremation regulations to eliminate the possibility of a second post-mortem.
Arrested from the neighboring state of Odisha on Thursday, Ghosh was presented in the Barrackpore district court on Friday. During the hearing, his lawyer filed a bail application on health grounds.
The lawyer argued that Ghosh, aged 78, suffers from multiple age-related ailments and requires continuous medical care, thus warranting his release on bail. However, the prosecution opposed the bail, citing the severity of the RG Kar rape and murder case.
The district court judge rejected the bail plea and ordered Ghosh to be held in judicial custody for 14 days.
On August 8, during an event in Panihati, opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari announced a fresh investigation by the Barrackpore police commissioner into the “premeditated” and “hasty” cremation of the victim’s body.
Following this announcement, the victim’s father filed a new complaint at the Khardah police station. Based on this complaint, a new FIR was registered naming Nirmal Ghosh, local TMC councillor Somnath Dey, and the victim’s neighbor Sanjeev Banerjee.
Ghosh had been on the run since then but was ultimately arrested on Thursday night in Odisha. Meanwhile, police have also apprehended Sanjeev Banerjee, while Somnath Dey remains at large.
