Kolkata, August 14: Agnimitra Paul, the Minister of Urban Development and Municipal Affairs in West Bengal, has called for the arrest of former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. This demand arises from a significant conspiracy related to the rape and murder of a female junior doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata in August 2024.
Paul stated, “It is evident that Nirmal Ghosh, the former Chief Whip of the Trinamool Congress in the West Bengal Assembly, Somnath Dey, a Trinamool Congress councilor from Panihati, and Sanjeev Banerjee, a neighbor of the victim’s family, were involved in the hurried and conspiratorial cremation of the victim’s body at the Panihati crematorium.”
She raised questions regarding the actions of the former Chief Minister, noting, “Nirmal Ghosh and Sanjeev Banerjee have already been arrested, while Somnath Dey remains at large. If Ghosh and Banerjee can be arrested for being part of a larger conspiracy, why should Mamata Banerjee not face the same fate?”
Paul alleged that the former Chief Minister’s actions following the discovery of the victim’s body on August 9, 2024, were suspicious. She asked, “Why did she give instructions to the police from Jharkhand? Why was the post-mortem conducted after 6 PM, which is unusual? Why did she not order the police to secure the body?”
Additionally, Paul accused Banerjee of attempting to bribe the victim’s parents through the police to ensure their silence. “If Nirmal Ghosh has been arrested, then I believe the former Chief Minister should also be arrested for the same reasons,” she asserted.
Meanwhile, Nirmal Ghosh, who was arrested from Odisha on Thursday evening, was brought to the Khardah police station under the Barrackpore Police Commissionerate. As he was being taken to Barrackpore Court in the afternoon, he faced significant public outrage.
Local residents threw eggs at him, and some even slapped him. To protect himself, Ghosh quickly donned a helmet. The police managed to extricate him from the angry crowd and placed him in a police van.
It is noteworthy that Nirmal Ghosh is a former MLA of the Trinamool Congress from the Panihati Assembly constituency in North 24 Parganas, where the victim’s ancestral home is located. The current BJP MLA from Panihati is Ratna Debnath, the victim’s mother.
