
Mumbai, August 21: Shailesh Roy, a former TMC councillor from Ward 29 of the Howrah Municipal Corporation and a close associate of current Howrah MLA Arup Roy, has been arrested by Howrah police in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh. Following his arrest, police brought him back to Howrah on transit remand and presented him in court on Friday.
According to police sources, multiple criminal cases have been filed against Shailesh Roy in various Howrah police stations. He faces serious allegations, including extortion, assault, threats, fraud, and encroachment on both government and private land. Authorities received information that he was hiding in Ghazipur, prompting a team from Howrah police’s intelligence department to conduct a raid and apprehend him.
Howrah police’s Deputy Commissioner Rahul Mishra stated that Shailesh Roy is accused of several crimes, including extortion and assault. The police aim to interrogate him to investigate his alleged involvement in these cases, which is why he was brought back to Howrah on transit remand.
Police officials revealed that investigations are ongoing regarding allegations of extortion, fraud, and threats amounting to millions of rupees against Roy. He is also accused of collaborating with gang members to attack and encroach upon both private and government land to promote real estate business. Additionally, there are records of him allegedly threatening and harassing members of opposition parties.
Reports indicate that his name has emerged in cases related to encroachment on government property in the Howrah Maidan and Mangla Haat areas. The police plan to interrogate him to gather information about his hideouts and contacts during his time on the run. They will also investigate his actual role in the registered cases and his connections with other accused individuals.
The arrest of Shailesh Roy has sparked discussions in local political circles. However, police maintain that the action was taken solely based on registered criminal cases and the facts that emerged during the investigation.
