New Delhi, February 11: Former Prime Minister and JD(S) MP H.D. Devegowda expressed his support for the Union Budget 2026-27 during a discussion in the Rajya Sabha. He commended the budget, emphasizing the need for a greater focus on employment, inclusive development, and regional priorities.
Devegowda noted that the budget highlights the importance of economic reforms, simplifying the tax system, and structural changes necessary to sustain growth amid global challenges. He warned, however, that economic growth alone is insufficient unless employment policy becomes a central issue.
He stated that the manufacturing sector and MSMEs can create substantial employment only if they receive support through robust skilling programs, local collaborative mechanisms, affordable loans, and predictable regulatory frameworks. Regarding taxation, Devegowda welcomed efforts to simplify the system but stressed the importance of maintaining taxpayer confidence. He argued that any changes affecting cash flow or previously settled cases must come with adequate safeguards to reassure honest taxpayers.
The former Prime Minister highlighted the need to extend attention beyond the national capital and major economic corridors to other cities and districts across the country. He asserted that real progress is only possible through balanced regional development nationwide. To achieve this, he called for a focus on urban administration, water security, climate resilience, and balanced regional growth.
To assist farmers, Devegowda proposed the establishment of a national board for jackfruit, tamarind, and jamun. He explained that these crops can thrive with minimal water, are sustainable in various conditions, and are increasingly in demand in the market. A dedicated board could promote their cultivation, enhance value addition, and increase farmers’ incomes in water-scarce regions.
In his concluding remarks, Devegowda stated that “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas” is not just a slogan but a serious responsibility. He emphasized the need for openness to criticism, readiness to make necessary reforms, and a commitment to inclusive, sustainable, and equitable development.
