Former Karnataka CM Calls for CBI Probe into Sting Operation Controversy

Basavaraj Bommai demands a CBI investigation into a controversial sting operation, questioning the integrity of state police.

Haveri, October 21 (Daily Kiran) : Basavaraj Bommai, the former Chief Minister of Karnataka and current BJP MP, has called for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the ongoing sting operation controversy in the state. Speaking to reporters in Haveri, he expressed doubts about the Karnataka police’s ability to conduct an impartial investigation.

Bommai criticized the Special Investigation Teams (SITs) formed by the state police, stating that public trust in these investigations has eroded. He argued that the matter involves multiple people and warrants a thorough investigation rather than being confined to a single complaint.

“Simply issuing statements will not lead to any revelations. A proper investigation is necessary. Currently, the inquiry is based on a complaint filed by Siddaramaiah, which doesn’t constitute a serious or comprehensive investigation,” Bommai remarked.

He emphasized the need for an extensive probe into the circumstances surrounding the sting operation, which has sparked significant political turmoil in Karnataka. According to him, the controversy raises serious questions about the declining ethical standards in the state’s politics.

“A broad investigation is essential to uncover the truth. The CBI should handle this case, as the Karnataka police cannot ensure a fair investigation,” he stated.

Challenging the track record of the SIT, Bommai questioned whether any of their investigations have ever revealed the complete truth, asserting that public confidence in such inquiries has diminished. He also raised concerns about the potential for police pressure during investigations.

In response to Home Minister Priyank Kharge’s assertion that the state police is conducting a thorough investigation and that a CBI inquiry is unnecessary, Bommai countered that mere statements from the minister cannot justify the current investigation’s adequacy.

He added, “The focus should be on their track record. Investigations by the Karnataka police SIT are often not comprehensive. There is also a risk of police succumbing to pressure in this case, so it should be handed over to the CBI.”

Bommai insisted that all aspects of the controversy must be investigated, rather than limiting it to just one complaint. He expressed that only a thorough inquiry could bring the facts to light and restore public confidence. When asked if the sting operation was intended to undermine Siddaramaiah, he noted that the former Chief Minister has remained silent on the matter since its emergence.

He suggested that Siddaramaiah would present his side of the story at the appropriate time. Regarding the potential link between the sting operation and power transfer in the state, Bommai highlighted Siddaramaiah’s often rebellious political trajectory.

“Considering his political background and the circumstances surrounding the power transfer, especially since the Chief Minister himself has raised the issue, many questions arise. Answers to these questions can only be found through a proper investigation,” he explained.

When questioned about possible blackmailing related to the sting operation, Bommai stated that Siddaramaiah would need to clarify this matter himself.

On the meeting between expelled BJP MLA Basanagouda Patil and BJP state president B.Y. Vijayendra, Bommai remarked that political differences should not prevent leaders from collaborating.

“In politics, there are no permanent enemies. I see no enemies, only competition. Hence, it is a positive development for leaders to come together and work in unity,” he concluded.

He expressed optimism that if the BJP moves forward cohesively, it could achieve significant victories in the future.
