Former India Hockey Coach Michael Nobbs Passes Away at 72

New Delhi: Michael Nobbs, former coach of the Indian men’s hockey team, passed away on Thursday at the age of 72. The Australian hockey veteran had been battling illness for some time. Apart from coaching India, Nobbs also served as the head coach of the Japanese men’s hockey team during his career.

Nobbs is survived by his wife Lee Capes, a former Australian women’s hockey player, and their daughter Kaitlyn, who currently plays for the Australian women’s national team.

As a player, Michael Nobbs represented Australia in 76 international matches between 1979 and 1985. He was part of a successful era in Australian men’s hockey and competed in major tournaments including the 1981 Hockey World Cup held in Bombay and the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games.

In 2011, Nobbs was appointed head coach of the Indian men’s hockey team during a challenging phase following India’s failure to qualify for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Under his guidance, India showed promise by qualifying for the 2012 London Olympics, although the team finished last in the tournament, which led to his removal from the position.

Despite the disappointing Olympic outcome, Nobbs played a significant role in revitalising Indian hockey from June 2011 to July 2023. He worked closely with players to improve fitness standards and instil professional discipline, contributing to the sport’s development during a critical period.

Hockey Australia paid tribute to Nobbs with a heartfelt message, expressing deep condolences to his family, friends, former teammates, and all whose lives he influenced through hockey. The organisation described him as a respected professional and dedicated servant of the sport.

Known for his consistency and work ethic, Nobbs represented Australia primarily as a defender. His legacy in hockey is marked by both his playing achievements and his coaching contributions across multiple countries.
