Noida, September 8 (Daily Kiran) : Rakesh Mehta, the former Chief Secretary of Delhi, tragically took his own life on September 6 at his residence in Noida. The 74-year-old bureaucrat left behind a note that mentioned health and mental challenges as reasons for his decision.
Mehta’s body was discovered at his home, and his funeral took place on Sunday. As a member of the 1975 batch of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), he had a distinguished career within the Delhi administration, serving in various roles under former Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit. Prior to becoming Chief Secretary, he held the significant position of Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, where he addressed numerous civic issues in the capital.
In 2007, Mehta assumed the role of Chief Secretary and held the position for over three years. During his tenure, he was instrumental in planning and implementing key projects in transportation, electricity, and civic infrastructure, aimed at enhancing public services and modernizing the city’s facilities, particularly as Delhi prepared for major international events.
Notably, under his leadership, the 2010 Commonwealth Games were successfully hosted in the national capital. His ability to coordinate among various government departments was praised by colleagues, reflecting his commitment to public service throughout his career.
Authorities are treating the case as a suicide based on the note found at his home and the circumstances surrounding his death. Investigations are ongoing to complete the necessary formalities.
