New Delhi, March 19: A new controversy has emerged in Pakistan cricket regarding the fitness of Babar Azam and Fakhar Zaman. Reports indicate that both players were not fully fit when selected for the T20 World Cup.
The issue gained traction when Aqib Javed called for an investigation from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) during a press conference. Dr. Javed Mughal, a sports medicine expert associated with the PCB medical panel, has also raised concerns about the players’ fitness.
According to reports, after the World Cup, Babar’s injury was found to be more severe than initially reported. Consequently, he decided not to participate in the National T20 Cup. Meanwhile, Fakhar Zaman has been struggling with injuries for an extended period.
The inclusion of Babar Azam and Fakhar Zaman in the T20 team despite their unfitness has also put the team’s physiotherapist, Cliff Deacon, under scrutiny. The selection committee claims they only chose players who received fitness clearance from the physiotherapist. Cliff has faced accusations of allowing players with minor injuries to participate in matches previously.
The PCB is set to investigate this matter. The truth will emerge regarding whether Babar and Fakhar were selected for the World Cup while unfit. If the investigation confirms these reports, the PCB may take strict action. Currently, Babar Azam is undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy and is expected to captain Peshawar Zalmi in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) starting March 26.
