Essential Tips for Caring for Your Baby in the First Year

New Delhi, May 9: The first year of a child’s life is considered the most delicate and crucial for their development. During this period, a baby is entirely dependent on their parents for care. Therefore, it is vital to focus on proper care, nutrition, and routine.

When it comes to nutrition, breast milk is regarded as the best and most complete food for newborns. Breastfeeding provides essential nutrients, immunity, and protection. For the first six months, a baby should only be given breast milk, with no need for any external food. If there are concerns about milk supply, consulting a doctor is essential.

As the baby grows, particularly after six months, their nutritional needs begin to increase. At this stage, solid foods are gradually introduced. Initially, light and easily digestible foods should be offered, such as fruit juices, soups, or boiled and mashed vegetables. Gradually, items like porridge, khichdi, and fresh home-cooked meals can also be included.

Teething typically begins between six to eight months, making it easier to introduce solid foods. However, new foods should be introduced cautiously, considering the baby’s digestive capacity to avoid any discomfort.

According to Ayurveda, milk and ghee hold special significance in a child’s diet. The right amount of ghee is beneficial for growth and energy. Additionally, mild spices like turmeric, cumin, and black pepper can aid digestion.

A common mistake today is introducing junk food or packaged meals to children too early, which can be harmful to their health. Therefore, it is advisable to provide fresh, homemade, and nutritious meals.

The habit of drinking water should also be gradually instilled. After six months, lukewarm water can be given to the baby, which helps maintain digestion and keeps the body clean.

Alongside nutrition, a child’s routine and environment are equally important. Babies learn a lot by observing their parents, so the home environment should be calm, happy, and filled with love. Spending quality time with the baby, talking to them, and showing affection is crucial for their mental development.

Children should be given opportunities to play and learn new things, as this enhances their cognitive abilities. However, it is essential to keep them away from tea, coffee, or any addictive substances. Additionally, children should never be scolded or hit, as this can have a negative impact on them.
