Mumbai, April 15: Political analyst Tahseen Poonawalla shared his views on the Women’s Reservation Amendment Bill. He warned that failing to address these issues could turn Parliament into a family club, where fathers nominate daughters and husbands nominate wives. Observing local governance structures, he noted that often, spouses exchange responsibilities, which undermines genuine empowerment. Steps must be taken to ensure that reservations are granted to women who are determined to succeed on their own merit.
Poonawalla also responded to arguments suggesting that this initiative would increase the number of seats in Parliament. He stated that if such claims are made, it is essential to clarify how these provisions will be implemented, particularly regarding quotas for SC/ST communities.
He made it clear that he does not oppose the government’s initiative. While some suggest a 33% reservation for women, he advocates for 50%. However, he reiterated the need to ensure that only women from grassroots backgrounds benefit from this reservation.
