Glasgow, August 2: Welsh cycling star Emma Finucane has made history at the Commonwealth Games. On Sunday, she claimed the women’s keirin title in Glasgow, becoming the first sprint cyclist to win four track gold medals in a single edition of the Games.
At the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, the 23-year-old Finucane achieved a remarkable clean sweep by winning the keirin gold. Previously, she had secured titles in team sprint, individual sprint, and the 1,000-meter time trial, accomplishing this feat over four consecutive days.
Finucane triumphed over New Zealand’s Ellesse Andrews to take first place. The reigning Olympic champion Andrews had to settle for the silver medal while attempting to defend her Commonwealth keirin title from 2022.
With this latest victory, Finucane surpassed Ana Meyers and Andrews, both of whom previously held the record for the most track cycling gold medals won at a single Commonwealth Games. Meyers won three medals in 2010, while Andrews achieved the same in 2022.
Finucane also became the first woman from Wales to win four gold medals at a single Commonwealth Games. She has now taken the title of Wales’ most successful female athlete in the history of the Games, succeeding para-sprinter Olivia Breen.
This achievement marks the highest number of gold medals won by any athlete in a single Commonwealth Games. Previously, New Zealand’s Aaron Gate won four golds at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, including three on the track and one in road racing.
Despite this historic success, weightlifter David Morgan remains Wales’ most successful athlete in Commonwealth Games history, with nine gold and three silver medals throughout his career. Finucane’s memorable performance in Glasgow has firmly established her as the top track cyclist of the Games, setting new records with her four gold medals in sprint events.
