Elon Musk has indicated that merging SpaceX with Tesla could be beneficial, furthering discussions about an integration of his two prominent companies. During a recent earnings call following SpaceX’s Q3 report on October 20, Musk stated, “Do I think it would be a good idea? Yes.” He revealed that both companies have established independent committees to explore the possibility of a merger, though he is unable to directly participate in the discussions due to conflict of interest.

SpaceX’s earnings report showed impressive growth, with sales hitting $14.6 billion—a 161% increase year-over-year. The company reported a net income of $4.4 billion, driven largely by its artificial intelligence contracts and successful Starlink operations. However, this expansion comes with significant expenses, including $19.6 billion in capital expenditures for Q3 and projected costs of up to $40 billion for the fourth quarter.

In contrast, Tesla’s latest financial results reflected challenges. The company reported nearly flat revenue at $28 billion, with net income falling 43% to $787 million. Automotive revenue slipped by 3% amid rising production costs and increased operating expenses associated with the company’s pivot towards AI and robotics innovations. Still, Tesla saw a significant increase in its service sector, with revenues climbing 33%.

Musk described negotiating the potential merger as fraught with complexities, stating, “I feel like I’m tap dancing through a minefield.” This reflects concerns regarding shareholder approval, particularly given Musk’s majority control over SpaceX compared to Tesla’s more diverse ownership structure. Both companies face scrutiny from regulators, which may impact the merger’s feasibility.

As discussions proceed, the exact implications of a merger remain speculative. Financial analysts suggest that any proposal will need to be carefully evaluated based on its pricing and potential impact on existing shareholders. Musk himself mentioned that a merger might face significant regulatory hurdles.

In the meantime, Tesla continues to innovate amid its challenges. The company reported a growing interest in its Full Self-Driving (FSD) subscription service, which saw a 67% increase in active subscriptions. Tesla is also expanding its Cybercab project, although the rollout for individual consumer sales remains pending.

Looking ahead, Musk believes that the integration of SpaceX and Tesla could enhance operational synergies, particularly with joint ventures such as their semiconductor factory in Texas. However, the timeline for any merger remains unclear as both companies face market pressures and growth strategies.
