New Delhi, October 6 (Daily Kiran) : The Election Commission of India (ECI) issued a press note on Tuesday, clarifying the situation surrounding a march and meeting request by opposition MPs. The ECI stated that the demand from a delegation of 240 MPs, led by Rahul Gandhi, was against established protocol and did not follow the necessary procedures.
According to the press note, the ECI learned through media reports during the day that some MPs wished to meet with the commission. However, it was made clear that by 4 PM, no political party had officially requested a meeting through authorized representatives.
Around 4 PM, the Delhi police informed the ECI that the delegation, led by the Leader of the Opposition, wanted to submit a memorandum. The commission noted that a formal process for meetings with political parties had been established in 2025, and all parties had been made aware of this protocol. Under these rules, any political party or joint delegation must request a meeting time through their officially authorized representative, and a meeting is scheduled based on mutual agreement.
When the ECI was considering the MPs’ request after 4 PM, the Delhi police’s Deputy Commissioner informed them that the proposed meeting would involve the group of 240 MPs at the Parliament House Annex. The ECI deemed this request unusual and unacceptable, stating that such meetings should occur within the ECI premises, not at the Parliament House Annex.
To resolve the impasse, the ECI proposed an unprecedented solution: sending a senior officer to the meeting location to receive the memorandum. However, this proposal was rejected by the MPs.
In conclusion, the ECI reaffirmed its respect for the country’s parliamentary and democratic processes while emphasizing the importance of adhering to its own protocols and traditions. Any political party can request a meeting with the commission, which will schedule a date and time based on availability.
