BJP Criticizes Oppositions March Against Election Commission

Ranchi, October 6 (Daily Kiran) : BJP spokesperson Sandeep Verma has launched a strong critique of opposition MPs, who have staged protests and marches against the Election Commission. Speaking in Ranchi, he dismissed the opposition’s actions as mere theatrics that would not yield any benefit to the Congress party. Verma emphasized that the Election Commission is fulfilling its duties and should be allowed to operate without interference.

Referencing the Emergency period of 1975, Verma pointed out that the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi faced accusations of misusing power. He argued that those who no longer trust the Constitution are now attempting to undermine constitutional institutions, including the Election Commission. According to Verma, unnecessary interference in the Commission’s operations is unwarranted.

When questioned about the call for a boycott of elections by the Congress party, Verma remarked that any group claiming to be a political party should participate in the democratic process. He stated that engaging in elections would clarify their political standing. The BJP, he noted, addresses issues that matter to the public, whether in power or in opposition.

Verma also raised concerns regarding the opposition’s movements and their alleged foreign connections. He questioned the provision of food and other amenities to protesters during Congress-led demonstrations and called for transparency regarding funding sources. He criticized Rahul Gandhi for criticizing India’s policies on international platforms, urging the opposition to differentiate between opposing the government and opposing the nation.

On the scrutiny of the Election Commission, Verma reiterated its status as an independent constitutional body, free from BJP or central government interference. He mentioned that any procedural issues are currently under the Supreme Court’s review, which can issue appropriate directives if necessary. He challenged the opposition to provide evidence for their claims of dissent within the Commission, citing the example of former Chief Election Commissioner M.S. Gill, who was later appointed to Parliament and the central cabinet by Congress.

Regarding the discussion on implementing a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in West Bengal, Verma stated that such legislation is essential for the entire country. He criticized Congress for advocating Sharia law, asserting that Muslim women should have the right to live according to their own rights.

In response to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge’s assertion that elections and governments are illegal, Verma urged Congress to resign in states where it governs, such as Karnataka, Kerala, Himachal Pradesh, and Jharkhand, and to seek a fresh mandate. He pointed out that Congress only raises questions about the electoral process when it faces defeat, while remaining silent when it wins.

Verma concluded by stating that the Congress party’s support has been declining across various states. He advised the party to introspect on the reasons for its electoral losses rather than blaming constitutional institutions. He predicted that Congress will soon gain a clearer understanding of its diminishing public support.
