
Kolkata, April 27: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has directed the West Bengal police to swiftly identify and arrest all individuals involved in the violence that erupted in Jagatdal, North 24 Parganas, on Sunday night. Several people were injured during the incident.
The clash occurred around 11 PM between supporters of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). A bomb explosion during the altercation left a Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) personnel injured. The Election Commission has also requested a report from the police regarding the incident.
At the time of the violence, BJP candidate from Noapara and former MP Arjun Singh was at the Jagatdal police station to file a First Information Report (FIR). Over 200 TMC supporters were present at the scene.
Initially, a heated argument broke out between the two groups, which escalated into a violent confrontation. Firearms and homemade bombs were reportedly used, resulting in injuries to a CAPF member.
To control the situation, a large joint team from the CAPF and the Barrackpore police commissionerate arrived on the scene. So far, four individuals have been arrested, including Kaushik Das, Sikandar Prasad, Gopal Raut, and Shyamdev Shaw.
Several other suspects involved in the incident remain at large. The Election Commission has instructed the police to locate and detain them as soon as possible. Additionally, the Commission has requested continuous patrolling in the area by state police and CAPF personnel.
Voting for the second phase will take place on April 29 across 142 assembly seats in six districts, including North 24 Parganas and the state capital, Kolkata. The counting of votes is scheduled for May 4.
The Election Commission has implemented stringent security measures for the polling day, which are expected to be even more robust and comprehensive compared to the first phase held on April 23.
