Eight Arrested for Attacking BSF Personnel Near India-Bangladesh Border in Tripura

Eight suspects have been arrested for assaulting BSF personnel near the India-Bangladesh border in Tripura, highlighting border security concerns.

Agartala, November 3 (Daily Kiran) : In a significant security incident, eight individuals have been arrested in connection with an attack on Border Security Force (BSF) personnel near the India-Bangladesh border in the Sepahijala district of Tripura. The incident occurred in Ashabari, where BSF troops responded to reports of illegal activities involving Indian and Bangladeshi smugglers.

On Monday, BSF soldiers observed suspicious activities near the international border and apprehended an Indian smuggler. However, the Bangladeshi smugglers on the other side of the border fled the scene. The arrested smuggler later escaped and claimed that the BSF personnel had assaulted him. This claim sparked outrage, leading a large crowd of men and women to gather at the scene.

The crowd surrounded the BSF vehicle and attacked the soldiers with sticks, resulting in injuries to three personnel, including a company commander. Reports indicate that the assailants also attempted to seize a BSF soldier’s weapon and damaged a BSF vehicle. One individual from the attacking group was also reported injured.

Senior officials from the BSF and police quickly arrived at the scene to restore order, but tensions remain high in the area. Authorities have confirmed that eight suspects have been arrested so far, with ongoing efforts to capture additional individuals involved in the attack.

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha condemned the assault on BSF personnel, stating on social media, “Eight individuals have been arrested in connection with the attack on our brave BSF soldiers in Ashabari. All involved will face justice, and strict legal action will be taken against them. Violence against our security forces will not be tolerated.”

In another post, he expressed his strong disapproval of the brutal attack, emphasizing that such violence against security forces is completely unacceptable. He called for immediate and stringent action against those responsible, asserting that security personnel deserve the utmost respect and protection.

Tripura shares an 856-kilometer border with Bangladesh and is surrounded by the neighboring country on three sides, making it sensitive to issues related to cross-border migration. The region has implemented fencing in various areas to combat smuggling, border crimes, and the activities of anti-national elements.
